PARTING WAYS

The library was empty, as usual. Kayla searched the shelves, trying to remember where she had taken the book from. When she found the spot, she hesitated and let the book flap open to the page she had discovered last night.

Her eyes locked on the black circle around the Light Summoner. She didn’t dare to look any closer, out of fear she would recognize her own face.

“Back for your evening studies?” Brighid said as she crossed the cramped room and sat by the table. She steepled her fingers to rest her chin on them. “Why don’t you sit with me?”

“I’m just returning the book,” Kayla said. Her nape prickled with sweat, and her shoulders still ached from her horrible training session with Iobhar. She wished she could just lie down and sleep.

“Sit,” Brighid said. Her stern tone of voice left no room for refusal.

Kayla settled on the chair opposite of Brighid, placing the book on the table between them.

“Iobhar would not say a word when he returned from the forest, but he does not have to speak for me to hear the truth. I know he showed you how to summon fire. And he took you far away from the settlement in case the lesson revealed your abilities to wield light.” Brighid leaned back in her chair with a cunning smile. “And here you are. Tense like an arrow strung to a bow. Returning the only book in this collection that carries a hint to the ghairsola’s legend.”

“No, I—” The words died on Kayla’s tongue. Most faeries excelled at hiding the truth without lying, but Kayla had told lies—big and small—all her life. She didn’t know how to do it any other way.

“You need not concoct some story that is not true. I will not believe any of it.” Brighid’s eyes traveled across Kayla’s face and down to her hands, resting on the book. “Show me.”

This time, Kayla didn’t have to lie. “I’m not sure how.”

“Well, at least try.”

Kayla straightened in her seat and flipped her hands so her palms faced the ceiling. She opened her mind, searching for the element she wanted to summon. Earth pulsed beneath her feet, and water ran in rivulets below ground, waiting for her call. Air was everywhere around her—and inside of her. She tried harder and still found neither fire nor light.

“You know better than this,” Brighid scolded. “The elements are always within reach. Sometimes you must broaden your horizon to find them.”

“How am I supposed to summon light if the sun’s down already?”

Brighid threw her arms up in exasperation. “If only there were a source of light during the night. Think, girl!”

“The moon,” Kayla whispered. She focused on the stream of pale light seeping through the open door, and a shimmer gathered between Kayla’s fingers.

“It is a start. With a bit more practice—”

Kayla snuffed the light by closing her hand into a fist. “There’s something I should tell you.”
